Corporate Sponsorship Program

About the program

Ruby Central is the nonprofit foundation behind Ruby’s open source ecosystem and community. We maintain projects like RubyGems and Bundler, which every Ruby developer relies on, and host events like RubyConf, which has been bringing our community together since 2001.

However, we can’t do this work without support from our sponsors.

By becoming a sponsor, you can help ensure that our open source program and other initiatives continue to thrive. Your support will directly impact the longevity and stability of the tools that power Ruby applications and allow us to scale events in more locations worldwide.

What does it mean to be a sponsor of Ruby Central?

Sponsors will benefit from thought leadership opportunities, networking, and enhanced industry visibility, along with talent acquisition support within one of the most innovative and enthusiastic development communities on Earth!

What does sponsorship help fund?

Ruby Central’s primary conferences (RubyConf and RailsConf) are financially self-sustaining, but our other core initiatives—open source projects like RubyGems and Bundler, as well as support for local community groups—rely on sponsorship. Your help keeps these programs funded and Ruby Central’s mission alive. Without ongoing support, the development, maintenance, and security of these tools would be at risk.

  • Open source development (70-75%): Most of our sponsorship funds are dedicated to maintaining and improving the critical infrastructure and tools that power the Ruby ecosystem. This ensures that essential projects—such as RubyGems, the backbone of package management, and Bundler, crucial for managing application dependencies—remain secure, reliable, and scalable.
  • Nonprofit operations (20%): Operational funding covers the core functions that allow Ruby Central to coordinate, advocate, and lead within the Ruby community. This includes salaries, administrative costs, marketing, and strategic development. As our sponsorship program grows, the need for overhead support is expected to become a smaller percentage of our overall funds raised, keeping our focus on impact for the community.

Community support: We support local Ruby meetups, regional conferences, and help facilitate event grants that help the Ruby community connect and grow. Our program equips organizers with resources, funding, and guidance to create successful events and meetups across the world.

Benefits of supporting Ruby Central

Sponsorship isn’t just about donations—it’s a direct investment in the Ruby ecosystem that supports your business and development teams. Some of the benefits include:

  • Securing core Ruby infrastructure: Projects like RubyGems and Bundler power the Ruby ecosystem but require sponsorship to remain robust, secure, and adaptable. Sponsorship is a chance to give back to these resources that your organization depends on.
  • Enhanced brand visibility: Sponsors are showcased across Ruby Central’s platforms and events, reaching a global community of Ruby developers and enthusiasts.
  • Access to top Ruby talent: Supporting Ruby Central strengthens your brand within the community, helping you attract and retain talented Ruby developers.
  • Advocacy for open source development: Sponsorship reflects a commitment to open source work, positioning your organization as a leader and advocate in the OSS and Ruby ecosystem.

More about Ruby Central’s Open Source Program

The mission of Ruby Central’s Open Source Program is to maintain a secure, reliable ecosystem for the Ruby programming language. Our focus is on strengthening and sustaining Ruby’s core tools—including RubyGems.org, Bundler, and other essential infrastructure—to meet the needs of developers at every level, from individual creators to teams within large tech companies. By building and supporting key open source projects, we are empowering the Ruby community to work with confidence and ensuring that Ruby remains a top choice for software development.

Our vision for 2025 centers on three core pillars: Security, Stability, and Sustainability.

Security remains our highest priority, driving our continued efforts to strengthen supply chain protections and refine our cloud infrastructure controls.

Stability is essential for ensuring uninterrupted service, and we are dedicated to enhancing disaster recovery planning and operational documentation to prepare for any challenge.

Sustainability focuses on establishing stable funding for ongoing maintenance and essential projects, enabling the growth of team contributions, and ensuring that Ruby’s foundational infrastructure is supported for years to come.

More about community support

Ruby Central’s community support program is a growing initiative that helps us empower the organizers of events beyond RubyConf and RailsConf (these main conferences are financially self-sustaining and do not receive sponsorship funds from Ruby Central).

Our goal is to help Rubyists host more local meetups and regional conferences across the globe. These gatherings are vital for strengthening the Ruby ecosystem, and our program equips organizers with resources, guidance, and sometimes funding to run successful events in their communities.

Our support includes tools like an organizer checklist, “event-in-a-box” templates, sponsor guidance, monthly forums for event organizers to meet and exchange ideas, and more. Our goal is to make it easier for organizers to focus on what matters: building community.

One of our most impactful achievements so far has been acting as a support system for the organizers of Rocky Mountain Ruby, which has become profitable with our help and may soon contribute back to Ruby Central, thus enabling us to fund more grants.

We have also started working with Fastly to distribute small grants for local Ruby meetups.

Our goal is to expand this support system, building a practical and financial foundation for Ruby meetups and events worldwide.
