The work that keeps Ruby running
Ruby Central maintains the infrastructure millions of developers rely on, supports the people doing that work, and builds programs that help the ecosystem grow.
Serving our community
Every gem install depends on work that mostly goes unseen.
We keep the tools developers rely on to package, share, and use Ruby software secure, reliable, and fast. Sustainable, high-quality infrastructure isn’t just good for individual projects, it’s essential to Ruby’s long-term health. Ruby Central is uniquely positioned to coordinate, fund, and operate these shared resources on behalf of the entire community.
Our mission
To sustainably provide high-quality and secure infrastructure through RubyGems to reliably build Ruby software that enables businesses and our community to thrive. We are dedicated to supporting impactful open source projects on behalf of the Ruby community and fostering the growth of open source contributors to ensure the continuity of the Ruby ecosystem.
Our vision
Our vision for 2026 focuses on three pillars: Security, Stability, and Sustainability. Security is our top focus continuing our work on addressing supply chain security and improving our cloud infrastructure controls. Our Stability efforts center on disaster recovery planning and a operations documentation. Sustainability looks at providing stable funding for maintenance and crucial projects and paving the way for expanding team contributions.
Open source
Open source work keeps the tools the Ruby ecosystem depends on secure, stable, and funded.
RubyGems.org
The public hosting platform for Ruby gems, powering millions of applications. We keep it fast, secure, and available.
Every time a developer runs gem install, they're relying on infrastructure Ruby Central maintains. That means ongoing investment in performance, security tooling, abuse prevention, and the open source contributors who do the work.
Infrastructure and security
The behind-the-scenes work of keeping RubyGems, Bundler, and RubyGems.org secure, stable, and ready for whatever the ecosystem throws at them.
Most of this work is invisible when it's going well — 24/7 on-call coverage, disaster recovery, supply chain security, and open source contributor support.
What this includes:
- Security audits and vulnerability response
- Performance monitoring and optimization
- Abuse prevention and package integrity
- Dependency management for Bundler and RubyGems
- Open source contributor support
This work is funded by sponsors and members.

Project DREAM
Creating pathways into Ruby for underrepresented people through apprenticeships, mentorship, and community partnerships.
The Ruby community is stronger when it reflects the full range of people who build with it. DREAM exists to make that a reality.
- Apprenticeships: Paid, structured learning opportunities for early-career developers.
- Mentorship: Connections between experienced Rubyists and people new to the ecosystem.
- Community partnerships: Working with organizations that serve underrepresented groups in tech.
Apprenticeships
Paid, structured opportunities for early-career developers to contribute to real open source projects.
Ruby Central apprenticeships pair people new to Ruby with experienced contributors, giving them the context, support, and real work needed to grow into the ecosystem. This program is designed for developers who are early in their careers and looking for a structured path into open source contribution and Ruby development.
